Ph.D. student positions (f/m) CTA and VERITAS at DESY

DESY is one of the world’s leading research centres for photon science, particle and astroparticle physics as well as accelerator physics.

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the next generation very-highenergy gamma-ray observatory. Currently in the prototype phase, the array will include over 100 telescopes at both a northern site at La Palma and a southern site in Chile. DESY at its Zeuthen location is a lead participant in the CTA consortium, and has led the prototyping of one of the telescope types, as well as efforts for data collection and processing and Monte Carlo simulation. More information can be found at The positions are offered in the context of a Helmholtz Young investigator group based at DESY Zeuthen.

Ihr Aufgabengebiet:

  • The Ph.D. positions will be based at DESY Zeuthen, with degrees granted by the University of Potsdam
  • Several research projects are available, focusing on physics sensitivity studies for CTA and data analysis for VERITAS, including dark matter searches and intergalactic magnetic field studies
  • Development work in scientific computing for CTA is expected to be a component of the Ph.D. projects

Ihr Profil:

  • Masters degree in physics or astronomy 
  • Background in astrophysics, astronomy, or particle physics 
  • Coding skills (C++, python) 
  • Proficiency in English 

Salary and benefits are commensurate with those of public service organisations in Germany. Classification is based upon qualifications and assigned duties.
